A leadership session built for the people about to take the chairs

The challenge
WELD's annual leadership conference convened 275 registrants at Otterbein University under the theme Be Well To Lead Well. The brief was narrow in a useful way. Ninety minutes is long enough to lose a room and short enough that a general purpose keynote wastes it, and the audience was association leaders carrying real organizational load rather than people looking for encouragement.
What I delivered
I delivered a ninety minute session titled Be Well to Lead Well: Human Centered Leadership, built on the premise that sustainable leadership is a design problem rather than a willpower problem. Leaders do not burn out because they lack discipline. They burn out because the structures around them require heroics to function.
Session materials were developed and calibrated with the conference committee ahead of the event against the conference theme, rather than adapted from a standing keynote.
Results
- A ninety minute session delivered to 275 registered attendees at the association's annual leadership conference.
- Content developed specifically against the conference theme and reviewed with the conference committee in advance.
Why it matters
This is the closest analog to an association leadership summit for incoming officers: a defined audience of volunteer leaders, a fixed theme, and a single long session that has to carry its own weight. Building for the actual room beats adapting a keynote every time.
