The challenge
A national membership body with 23 regional affiliate councils needed programming its member firms would not simply register for, but finish, and that would show up as contracts rather than as attendance figures. The benchmark was unforgiving. Free member programming across the industry draws a 30 to 40 percent show rate, and most of it sends the member home with notes. When an association's members are independent operators, every hour of programming competes directly with billable work.
What I delivered
I led the government contracting track of a twelve week live series delivered inside the Capital Readiness Program.
The decision that shaped everything else came before the first session was written. Rather than assume what the cohort needed, we surveyed it. The two obstacles members named most often were access to teaming partners and not knowing where to begin. The curriculum was then built directly against those two answers, through structured navigation modules and an always on community layer, rather than against a standard syllabus.
Every session was then designed to end with a finished artifact in the member's hands. A completed capability statement. A scored readiness result. A working template or prompt pack they could use the next morning. Nothing in the series ended with a recording to watch later. Competency checks gated advancement between module blocks, so no member moved past a capability they had not demonstrated.
Alongside the series I produced the Corporate Plus town hall remarks and supporting announcement content, served as a judge in the program's valedictorian selection, and built the Compete and Win program delivered to the same membership.
Results
- $7.9Min contract awards generated by member firms within the first four months of the program, documented with the association.
- 94%show rate held across twelve consecutive weeks, against a 30 to 40 percent industry norm for free member sessions.
- 115member businesses filled 251 live seats across the series.
- 44 minutesaverage time in the room, out of sessions running roughly 50. Attendance held to the close rather than dropping after the opening.
Why it matters
Engagement is the metric most membership organizations cannot move. It moved here, and it did not move because the promotion improved. It moved because what the member walked out holding changed. That is the transferable finding: if you want attendance, change the exit, not the invitation.
