The challenge

Founded in 1900, the National Business League is the oldest national business association in the country, convening members through chapters nationwide. Its 125th annual conference sold out at more than 3,300 attendees. For the 126th, the association needed its National Buyer-Supplier Summit to work as a full day that moved members toward actual contracts rather than a lecture track they would sit through.

The hard part was the room itself. A single association audience spans first year owners who do not yet have a capability statement and established firms ready to take on volume. A day pitched at the average of that room lands on nobody in it.

What I delivered

I was selected from 643 speaker applications as a national conference speaker, and led and facilitated the National Buyer-Supplier Summit, a full day of the conference, in partnership with Dr. Ken L. Harris, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. Forrest S. Carter, National Director of the National Buyer-Supplier Program.

I designed the run of show around two ninety minute core competency blocks, business readiness and supplier readiness. Each block opened with a keynote, moved into a facilitated working session where attendees produced something, and closed with questions. A ninety minute working lunch carried a keynote plus facilitated rotations putting members directly in front of buyers. Opening and closing keynotes bracketed the day at thirty minutes each.

To solve the audience problem I built a target persona and audience profile mapped to the association's five membership tiers, with the depth of every topic calibrated to each tier rather than to a single assumed attendee.

I also designed a twenty five question scored supplier readiness instrument across eight dimensions, normalized to a hundred point scale, with automatic flag overrides and archetype based risk mapping. The association retains it as a reusable diagnostic beyond the conference.

Results

  • A full conference day designed, staffed and facilitated end to end.
  • 5membership tiers mapped to session design, so topic depth matched the actual room rather than its average.
  • 25question scored instrument delivered to the association as a durable asset rather than an event artifact.
  • Dr. Ken L. Harris, President and Chief Executive Officer, serves as a past performance reference for this engagement.

Why it matters

A membership is never one audience. Designing to the average of the room is the single most common reason association programming underperforms, and segmenting by the tiers an association already maintains is the cheapest available fix.
